How to measure a parcel for accurate UK quotes
Wrong measurements cause surcharges at the depot. Here is the right way.
What to measure
Longest side, then the next two perpendicular sides. Always measure the box, not the item — packaging counts.
Why volumetric weight matters
UK couriers price on whichever is larger: actual weight or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000 in cm/kg).
Avoid surcharges
Round up to the nearest cm and the nearest 0.5 kg. Depots remeasure and bill you for any underdeclaration plus an admin fee (typically £8–£15).
FAQ
Why was I charged extra after I posted my parcel?
The depot remeasured it and found you underdeclared. The volumetric formula caught you out.
Do I include the label in measurement?
Yes — anything attached to the box counts towards the dimensions.
