How to move a fridge, washing machine and oven safely
White goods are heavy, awkward and easy to break. Here is the safe order of operations.
Fridge-freezer
Defrost 24 hours ahead. Empty drip tray. Keep upright in transit. Wait 4 hours after the move before turning back on.
Washing machine
Drain the hoses, then refit the transit bolts (or the drum will smash internally). Disconnect both hoses, cap or bag the ends.
Oven and hob
Gas: must be disconnected by a Gas Safe engineer. Electric: turn off at the isolator switch, unplug, remove from the recess.

Can I move a fridge on its side?
Avoid it — if you must, lay it on the compressor side and leave upright for 24 hours before powering on.
Do I need transit bolts for a washing machine?
Yes — without them, the drum can damage internal components.
