Sending a bike by courier in the UK
Bikes ship surprisingly cheaply if you box them right. Here is the full process.
Get the right box
Most local bike shops give away delivery boxes free. Standard size is about 140 × 80 × 25 cm.
Strip and pack
Remove pedals, turn handlebars sideways, deflate tyres slightly, wrap the frame in pipe insulation, and protect the rear derailleur with a cardboard guard.
Cost and carriers
Specialist bike couriers (Bikemunk, BikeFlights, Sendmybag) charge £30–£60 within the UK.
DPD will take a boxed bike up to 30 kg from around £25.
Dedicated drivers are cheaper for high-value bikes — no conveyor handling means lower damage risk.
FAQ
Do I need insurance for a bike?
Yes — most policies exclude bikes by default. Specialist bike couriers include £500–£1,000 cover.
Can I send a bike assembled?
Only with a dedicated driver — no courier network will accept an unboxed bike.
