Sending lithium batteries and electronics legally in the UK

Battery shipping is heavily regulated. Here is the simple version for everyday senders.

Devices with batteries inside

UN3481 — allowed on most UK ground services if the battery is installed, undamaged, and under 100 Wh (most laptops and phones).

Spare/loose batteries

UN3480 — much more restricted. Most couriers refuse loose lithium batteries shipped alone. You need a dangerous-goods service.

Labelling and packaging

Lithium battery handling label on every parcel containing batteries. Tape over terminals, no chance of short-circuit.
