How to send musical instruments safely in the UK

Instruments are fragile, irregular, and often valuable. Here is how to ship them properly.

Guitars and stringed instruments

Detune strings (do not fully slacken — neck tension matters). Wedge the headstock, wrap the body in bubble wrap, and use a hardshell case inside an oversized box with 5cm of foam all round.

Keyboards and digital pianos

Always ship in the original box if you have it. Otherwise, custom-cut foam in a double-wall box rated to the weight.

Choose the courier carefully

Avoid economy networks for any instrument worth £200+. DPD, Parcelforce 24 or a dedicated driver are the safer choices.

FAQ

Can I insure a vintage guitar?

Most courier insurance caps at £500–£1,000. For higher value, use a specialist musical instrument courier or a dedicated driver with goods-in-transit cover.

Should I ship with the case?

Yes, always — but the case alone is not enough. Box it.
