Volumetric weight explained for UK senders
Two parcels, same scale weight, very different prices. Here is why.
The formula
Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5000 = volumetric weight in kg. Couriers bill on whichever is higher: actual or volumetric.
Worked example
A 50 × 50 × 50 cm box of feathers weighs 2 kg actual. Volumetric: 125,000 ÷ 5000 = 25 kg. You pay for 25 kg.
How to beat it
Squash boxes down to fit the contents. Use vacuum bags for soft goods. Pick a courier with a higher divisor — DPD uses 4000, Royal Mail uses 6000, both make a difference.
FAQ
Why is volumetric weight a thing?
Vans run out of space before they run out of weight capacity. Couriers price for the real cost of carrying.
Does every courier use the same divisor?
No — most use 5000, some 4000 or 6000. Always check.
